That’s actual footage of me trying to figure out the numbers for SPAKOW’s printing in the wake of my last post. It’s been a wild couple of days, gang. Some big swings up and down. I’ve been a wretch emotionally and frantic about still being able to get the book and not break the bank, or worse… loose money on this deal. Here’s that post:
Is this worth it?
It’s a click bait-y title sure, but it’s got some real weight behind it this time.
THE PLAN AS IT STANDS IS THIS!
SPAKOW will be coming out in Black and White moving forward. Not the whole book, just most of it. When I tell you how much money that saves you will be amazed. I was able to get the costs down to just under and over (depending on the page count) of $3 a book. That’s wild. That means I can actually (if more books are sold) make money from this thing!
“But Jamie, doesn’t that change the way the book looks?” you may ask. To that I say… “not really.”
The book is mostly in black and white as it stands. Or just a single spot color. So the loss of color isn’t that that crazy. Here’s a couple of pages form issue one Wizard Cowboy for reference.

The book will also be printed on an ivory paper so it’s won’t be pure, bright white. It’s a compromise I am willing to take. And I still think it looks pretty darn good.
The Baboon Strip surprised me the most. Almost like it was supposed to be in black and white the whole time. I’m really digging it’s new look. It’s real clean.
Doing Final Order Cut Offs?
Publishers often do FOCs for their books to know what they need to print and over print. It’s kind of like pre-ordering the book. In doing this we can gage the interest in the book and build or pivot around it.
Now that 4 issues are out of SPAKOW! and with Power Pulp (a new by the bootstraps distributor check out the post above) We are in talks of doing FOCs for the printing of the book moving forward. What does this mean? It means you tell your shop you want SPAKOW! they order it and once the book is printed it gets shipped to the shop and in your hands. This is the same way all of your LCBS work. So I’m hoping to have a new printing of Spakow 1 by September if we run it this way. That will give me time to make all of the changes for issues 1-4 and production of issue 5.
I have a whole long post that I’ve been trying to write about Heroes Con, now weeks past, and
this new kick ass collective that I am a part of, but life and printing has gotten in the way. Perhaps, this week that post will go out to you all. This has been a career of pivots and right now it’s been all pivots. All adjusting to new and the right thing. I am excited. And I’ve been getting more and more excited every day about comics the problems and pivots test your love for this stuff sometimes though. Fret not, Comics are coming. SPAKOW lives on. The future looks bright.
I am in!
Glad to hear you were able to being down the cost of the comics! And the pages look great like you said! Just saw your rough cover sketch for #5 and I can't wait to see more!
